A question can serve as a driving force for one to search for an answer.Although my family does not connect to the Jewell family, I was curious about the Callaway-Jewell connection, and I have now discovered it, and I hope it will be of interest to others.
I became curious when I discovered that Cason Callaway's middle name was Jewell.I was delighted to receive the copy of the 1936 newspaper article giving the origin of the name of the small town of Jewell, Georgia.Cason Callaway's mother was from Jewell.Putting these together, I assumed that there was a family connection. His mother's name was Ida Cason Callaway. Her mother's name was Olivia Pratt Jewell Cason. When I checked the 1860 census of Warren County, Georgia today, I found D.A. Jewell, 38, listed with his wife Mary A, 33, and children: Olivia, 11; Orlando, 9; William, 7; and Mary E., 2. (Interestingly, on the census the name was written "Jewel.")He was quite a successful man!!!
Cason Jewell Callaway was the founder of the beautiful Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GeorgiaI have just finished reading his biography, and I must say that he was a great man.My wife and I work as volunteers at the Gardens and on Friday of this week, we will serve as guides at his home at Blue Springs, near Hamilton, Georgia, about 5 miles south of Callaway Gardens. If you are interested in learning more about the Gardens, you may check the web site callawaygardens.com
Thank you, David, for responding to my initial inquiry because it gave me a good bit to work from in making the Callaway-Jewell connection.
