Are we all descended from Thomas Jernegan of Nansemond, VA?

While I'm hoping to find out more about my own Jernigan line (Stephen Jernigan, born in NC about 1805, settled in Smith County, MS by 1840), I'm hoping some of you may be able to help with one general question:

Is it believed that all Jernigans in the southern US - particluarly those that were here in the early years of our country - descended from Thomas Jernegan, of Somerlyeton, England, who arrived in Virginia in the early 17th century?

I'm hoping the answer to that question may at least help me get started with my search.
