Connie, Very excited to see your more recent posting. I've just found the name of my maternal g-gma, Selma Gunilla Jern. Her birth was registered in the Klockrike parish in Ostergotland, b. 9 Feb 1846. Her parents were Lifgr(Life Grenadier) Abraham Jern and Carolina Andersdotter, living in Wahlstad. She had at least six siblings.
Selma emigrated alone to Chicago in 1870. By 1880 she had married Johan P. Petterson, a Norwegian immigrant and had several children. By 1900 she was living with threechildren in Downey, CA and was a widow. One of their sons, Harold Aus Petterson, was my mother's father.
I was recently in Salt Lake at the FHL and started my Jern research. Very interesting about the Jern name and its military significance. I am very interested to learn of all family connections. Hope you can help.
