Thanks for replying. It's the first time anyone has bothered to answer any of my messages so I was quite chuffed.
However, I don't think our Fred Jepson is the same one. Since my initial post we have discovered that this particular branch were a bit peculiar. In 1861 Fred is listed as Fred Cutts living with his mother Mary Ann Cutts. In 1871 he is Fred Diggle living with his mother Mary Ann Diggle. In 1881 he is now Fred Jephson and living nearby is Mary Ann Jephson. In 1891 he is Fred Jepson and in 1901 he is Fred Jepson. His mother Mary Ann Jepson, (widow, father Benjamin Cutts) married John Diggle in 1886 (yes - a long time after calling herself Diggle) and John Diggle died a couple of weeks later - Fred Jepson, stepson, registered the death. We have been unable to find a wedding between Mary Ann Cutts and a Jepson - and indeed she did not start calling herself Jepson until after meeting John Diggle. When Mary Ann (Diggle again) died in 1903 she was also registered by her son Fred Jepson. Why the daft bat kept changing her name will probably be a mystery forever but I wondered if it was non-payment of debts or such like. It is very interesting that your Fred jepson comes from Lancashire, however, as so did John Diggle, and I have been told that the Cutts family came from the Oldham area at one time. It may be that Mary Ann married a Jepson from Lancashire (or was living with one) when Fred was born and that this where she got the name from.
Cheerio for now
