Hi,

Here is some informations conc. the family:

Jørgen Jepsen

His wifes and children

My english is not what it used to be. But I try nevertheless.

OBS: Many names and places are spelled different, specially in this part of the country. The name Jørgen can be spelled as Jürgen. Jep, Jeb, Jeppe and Ib is the same name and is used more or les quite accidentilly. Furthermore there can be differences between the church records and the census’s. Catharina could be Cathrine, Catharine or Kathrine.

In this part of the country people mix between the Danish and German language. The town of Aabenraa could therefore be spelled Apenrade.

As you may know, Slesvig and Holsten were two old dukedoms, affiliated to the Danish crown. In 1864 the Germans occopupied the dukedoms. In 1920 – after the 1. World War - the inhabitants in Slesvig could choose to be either Germans or Danish – not to have the old dukedom back. Therefore, the Northern part of Slesvig became Danish and the Southern part German. The most correct old name for Slesvig (both north and south) is in fact Sønderjylland (Southern Jutland).

Jørgen (in English: George) Jepsen was born in Lysabild parish on the Island of Als in 1814. His parents were Jeb Petersen Fæbro, born in 1788 in the village of Dyndved, Egen parish, Als, and Kirstine Marie Jørgensen, born in the village of Sarup, Lysabild parish, Als.

In 1829 the family moved from the Island of Als to Hostrupskov in Ensted parish, near the town of Aabenraa (in german: Apenrade). The same year, Jeb bought the house, which Jørgen took over in 1881.

On the 18th October 1840 in the church of Ensted, Jørgen married Johanne Marie Knudsen, born in Nyborg appr. 1812. Johanne had a child before the marriage,

-Jacobine Christine Jepsen, born 31th October 1834. The father was a sailor, Jacob Jepsen (not a member of “our” Jepsen-family)

In the marriage they got 3 children:

-Johanne Christine Marie Jepsen, born in November 1840
-Peter Jepsen, born 21st August 1843
-Evaldine Catharine Jepsen, born 3rd November 1846

In the census from 1845, the family lives in the street Ramsherred in Aabenraa:

Jørgen Jepsen, 31, married, ship carpenter, born in Lysabild
Johanne Marie Jepsen, born Knudsen, 32, married, his wife, born in Nyborg
Johanne Marie Christine Jepsen, 5, unmarried, there child, born in Hostrupskov
Peter Jepsen, 2, unmarried, there child, born in Aabenraa

The daughter Jacobine is seen in the same census, living in the same street, as a foster child in the family of Johannes E. Madsen and Catharina Madsen, born Knudsen. Catharina was also born in Nyborg and she was a sister of Johanne Marie Knudsen.

Johanne Marie died in 1857. The church records states:

“Dead – Aabenraa – 1857
March 2. – March 7.
Johanne Marie Jepsen, born Knudsdatter, legitim child of Knud Christensen and wife Johanne, born Petersdaughter. Married to the ship carpenter Jørgen Jepsen, of which marriage the following children are alive: 1. Jacobine Christine, 22 years old, 2. Johanne Marie Christine, 16½ years old, 3. Evaldine Chathrine, 11 years old and Maria, 7 years old.”

1sr November 1857 Jørgen Jepsen married Lena Catharina Lorentsen in Aabenraa.

In this marriage they got 1 child, Peter Jepsen, born in Aabenraa 6th Mai 1858 and baptisted 13th Mai the same year.

In 1881 Jørgen Jepsen bought the family house, Agsøvej 22, matr. Nr. 30, Hostrupskov, Ensted parish. He sold the house again in 1884.

Lena Cathrina died in 1898. The church record states:

“Dead Ensted – June 5th – June 9th
Wife Lena Catharina Jepsen, born Lorenzen, in Hostrupskov, a legitim daughter of the tenant Johanne Lorenzen and wife Mette Cathrina, born Mathiesen in Oebeling, Hellevad parish, where she was born the 30th October 1820. Was married 1857 1st November in Aabenraa to the surviving Jørgen Jepsen pensioner in Hostrupskov, of which marriage is 1 living son, Peter Jepsen, about 40 years old, married, living in San Fransisco.
The deceased was seek in 9 days only and died due to a pneumonia in the age of 77 years and 8 months.”

Many regards
Ib
