I'm continually bumping into a wall with this ancestor. What's known: Born 1821 in PA. His name appears as "Joseph" on some census schedules and "Josiah" on others. I'm sure I'm finding the same individual because of the associated family members, but I can't determine the "real" name; possibly he went by both, or maybe the census takers goofed on one or the other? He lived for most of his life in Marshall County, Va/WV, marrying Hanna(h) Orum (b. either 1826 or 1829), and having several children including my direct ancestor, John H(anson) Jenkins; another son was Joseph, and another was named after DeWitt Clinton (and appears as DeWitt on some documents and Clinton on others). He might be buried at Sand Hill, NE of Moundsville, but there's a possibility that that grave might belong to his son Joseph rather than him (I haven't been there yet). My evidence suggests that he was born in the adjoining county in Pennsylvania, Washington County, based on three facts: 1) his birthplace is noted as PA on some census schedules; 2) Washington County is (as noted) right next-door; and 3) his son John Hanson traveled to Washington County for his marriage (according to Justice of the Peace records) (specifically, to West Alexander, just about on the state line). My speculation is that his father may have been a John Jenkins, but that's not based on much more than a guess. If anyone has any information that may relate to this, I would be very interested in it! Mark F. Jenkins Westerville, Ohio Notify Administrator about this message?
