Frank "Mr. Frank" Fran-kowiak
SPRINGFIELD - Frank "Mr. Frank" Fran-kowiak, 84, of Springfield died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Whiting, Ind., the son of Frank and Mary Frankowiak. He married Anna Jenkins in 1945 in Bainbridge, Md.
Mr. Frankowiak graduated from Clark High School in Hammond, Ind., and earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from Indiana State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1942 to 1946 in the Philippine Islands. He taught at Stuart and Hay Edwards schools. He was a principal at Palmer School, Edison Junior High, Enos School and Springfield High School and director of secondary, adult and vocational education, retiring in 1982. He retired as parking manager for the city of Springfield in 1992.
He was a former member of Springfield Junior Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Membership Committee, Mental Health board of directors, American Red Cross board of directors, Board for Retarded Children and Springfield Boys Club. He formerly served as commander of American Legion Post 32; president of the Illinois Education Association, Springfield Principal Association and Phi Delta Kappa; vice president of the State Junior High School Association; director of the summer camp for crippled children at Camp Star of the Sea; and chairman of Sangamon County United Fund. He also served on the Sangamon County Board.
He was named Most Outstanding Jaycee and Outstanding Young Man of Springfield and received the Boyd Club Golden Boy Trophy, Sertoma International Service Award and Palmer School Reunion Award. He was a member of the American Legion Post 32, St. Paul's Lodge 500, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, High 12, Ansar Temple, Capitol City Shrine Club, Ansar Shrine Retirees Club, Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Christ Episcopal Church and Springfield Bible Church.
Survivors: wife, Anna; two daughters, Linda (husband, Jerry) Neubert of Sullivan, Wis., and Shirley Frankowiak of Springfield; son, Kenneth (wife, Jean) Frankowiak of Springfield; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Eleanor Lach of Whiting, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 12:30 p.m. Friday, Springfield Bible Church, John Standard officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
