Jenkins-Cherokee Lineage
I am the GG-Granddaughter of John S. Jenkins, born about 1828 in North Carolina. John S. Jenkins married Nancy M.(MNU) born about 1834 in South Carolina, I am decended from their daughter Margaret Emiline Jenkins who married Thomas Marion Ryan. John Jenkins has always been said to be Full Blood Cherokee Indian.
In researching, I ran across the desendents of Nancy Ward, there was a Nancy Emiline Jenkins who married a Patrick. I also have Patricks in my family. With the names the same I feel there is some conection, maybe cousin, neice?? We have been unable to tie these together, or find any info on John S. Jenkins. Some of my older cousins knew Emiline Jenkins Ryan the daughter of John and said she told them she was Cherokee, they still have a handmade blanket she made of Cherokee Indian design, it is very beautiful.
John and Nancy had seven children: Margaret Emiline born 1854 married Thomas Marion Ryan, Sarah Adaline born 1856 married James T. Cobbs, Mary Melvina born 1859 married Abraham Ryan, Eliza born 1861 married Henry Johnson in 1876, Smith born 1864, Lydia born 1867, John W. born 1875
In the 1850 census of North Carolina I find a Jesse Jenkins born about 1804 in NC and wife Nancy with son John age 20 in household, this would have put John born about 1830 +/-, this would match his birthday of 1828.
Also John S. Jenkins has a sister named Margaret and Eliza, and he named two of his daughters Margaret and Eliza.
Also Sarah Adline (Jenkins) Cobbs named one of her sons Jesse--Possibility after her Grandfather Jesse Jenkins
From all evidence I believe this Jesse Jenkins may be the father to my John Jenkins.
John S. Jenkins showed up in the Morgan County Alabama census in 1860 with his family. The last record we have of him is in 1880 Morgan Co. AL census.
Anyone who might know anything on this family and their Cherokee heritage, please contact me. Thanks Reba Skillman, [email protected]
