RW Capt. Thomas Jenkins
The marriage of Capt. Thomas Jenkins to Verlinda Lamar is the focal point where the three families of Jenkins, Lamar, and Russell merge. In view of the many postings regarding these families this brief overview will hopefully assist in resolving some questions. The most recent inquiries involve the James Lamar family and Osburn and Walter Russell families in Dekalb Co., AL, and MS.Capt. Jenkins and Verlinda had four known children: Thomas Francis, born 1769; Tabitha, born Jun. 18, 1770, married Thomas Russell (son of Matthew, prior to marriage of Matthew and Verlinda); William, died in AR; and James, went to CA. Capt. Jenkins’ will dated 1779 did not include William, but did include a daughter Mary.Capt. Jenkins died in 1781 during the RW.His widow, Verlinda, became the second wife of Matthew Russell, ca1785.Thomas Francis Jenkins eventually acquired the land that Matthew Russell owned in Pendleton Dist. (Oconee Co., SC)The Jenkins - Russell connection continued into TN and AL; the James Lamar and Osburn Russell connection continued into Dekalb Co., AL, and on to MS.William Jenkins, nephew of Capt. Thomas Jenkins, confirms the connection of Jenkins - Russell in his affidavit supporting the RW pension application of Thomas Russell's widow, Tabitha Jenkins Russell.More in depth details on these mergers and various members of these families are presented in "Desc. of Matthew Russell and Related Families in Jackson Co., AL:A Collection of Genealogies," pub. 2009 by W. Russell. Please contact me via this forum or email direct to discuss these families and or details for ordering the book.
