Charlotte I am not related to a Jefferson, but have a cousin who is related to a Jefferson. I have performed extensive research on Jeffersons trying to find her Jefferson parentage.
As to your elusive Campbell Jefferson, alias Thomas Campbell, Campbell Thomas Jefferson, I have been intrigued with all of the information and possible misinformation about this man. You mention that he had four (4) wives.
Some of the records of a Campbell Jefferson that I have come across in my research are: (1) Campbell Jefferson md Elizabeth Oliver, April 7, 1827, CD # 229, I picked up a copy of their divorce papers while doing research in Lincoln Co., TN a year or so ago; (2) Campbell Jefferson md Sarah Mccarty, January 18, 1838, Lafayette Co., MO, (Missouri marriages to 1850); (3) Campbell Jefferson md Lydia S(?)ims/Tines, December 3, 1843, in St. Clair AL,, Alabama marriages, 1809-1920; (4) Campbell Jefferson md Salena Reed, Red River, Texas,, Texas Marriage Index, 1966-2002; (5) Campbell Jefferson md to Nancy G. Hill, October 26, 1866, Hopkins, Texas (IGI); the 1870 Census has Campbell, age 59, brick mason, Nancy and 2 male children. Campbell is shown in the 1880 Case Co., TX Census, brick mason, age 74. Nancy was not with him. Nancy, b. AL, was with husband John Hill in Hopkins Co. TX 1860 Census with 3 male children.
Other purported marriages found in genealogy files for Campbell Jefferson marriages are with an Isabella Zelina Ware, b. MO., md bef. 1855, son William Dunklin Jefferson, age 4, Bowie, TX 1860 Census , b. 1855, and daughter Mary Josephina Jefferson, age 9, 1870, Bandara, TX Census. Campbell was not with this family in 1860 Census. Campbell was reportedly a Captain in the Union Army and died while coming though enemy lines. Marriage record has not been found.
Another genealogy file has a Campbell Jefferson md to Margaret Emily Parks abt. 1860 and father to a Monroe Jefferson, b. 1863 in TN. A record of this marriage has not been found. Monroe reported that his father and mother were both b. TN in the 1880 Lincoln Co. TN Census.
Another genealogy file cites that Campbell married an Elizabeth and father of 3 children, Adam, John, and Rebecca. Elizabeth and the 3 children are listed in the 1850 Washington Co., VA Census. Elizabeth was reported as age 30. No husband was listed in the household.
Campbell Jefferson is purported to have been born in Campbell Co. VA in several citations. Birth records were not required by law to be recorded in VA until 1853. No record of Jeffersons have been found in Campbell Co., VA until Campbell showed up.
Possible that Campbell was from Pittsylvania Co., VA. There is a possibility, while putting together 1810, 1820 and 1830 Census data that he could be a son of John Jefferson and Anna Ramsey of Pittsylvania Co., VA. Check out the census data for yourself. They had at least one daughter, and several sons, most unidentified. Campbell could be the next son born after Noton Jefferson.
