Hope some of you are still monitoring this forum. Hardy Jean married my 4th great aunt, Virginia Caroline Sewell. Here are my notes on Hardy and Virginia Caroline.
Virginia was the second wife of Hardy Jean. She was also sister to two of Hardy's sons-in-laws. She was also at least 43 when she married Hardy.
Do any of you know if she was married before she married Hardy and if her previous husband's surname was Chandler? As, in 1870 Virginia and Hardy are living in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia. Hardy is age 56, born in Georiga. Virginia is age 59 also born in GA. There is a William Hardy age 29, living in the family as is a Caroline Chandler, age 26 born in Georgia. There is a male 6 yr old, Jackson boy, who's first name is hard to make out, also living in the household.
Hardy Jean first appears in the 1840 Heard County Georgia census, having two sons under the age of 5 and one daughter under 5. He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Carroll County Georgia Census. By 1860 Eliza has died and Hardy has remarried to Virginia C. (Sewell). In 1870 Hardy is age 56, Virginia is age 59, and the children still at home is William age 29. There is a Caroline Chandler living in the household. She is age 36 born in GA. Also a 8 yr. old male Jackson born GA.

Then in 1870-1880 he is in Haralson County Georgia, after the county lines were redrawn. Hardy was a Justice of the Peace for about 30 years, marrying numerous couples in the county.
In 1850 in Caroll County, GA, the family is listed as Jones. Hardy is age 37 born in GA, his wife Emily is also 37, born in SC. Their children are Emily age 15, Jonathan age 14, William age 11, Mary age 9, Sophronia age 6, Thomas age 3 and Sarah age 9 months. Hardy is a farmer with a real estate value of $1,500.
