Summary of Jaycocks in Dutchess Co., NY
The following is the result of various Email conversations. Here, I am recommending that members of the family find a way to pool information, and add to this, and other such summaries. TAM
All right, I was most properly stomped on for assuming that Thomas [12] was the same as the Thomas in the will, although they were born about the same time, lived in about the same place, and both had wives named Mary; their children were different (apparently.) So, I have set the extra Thomas apart and below for future consideration. I also cruised through the various forums at GenForum and FamilyHistory.com and found a few items which I will reproduce below. These I have incorporated in to the summary I started. Of course, there are errors and omissions. What I recommend is that, first, you each study it and make changes as you think fit, then trade them and debate them.
An alternative is if you can find someone to act a "information central" to receive information and incorporate it into the summary. I would suggest three people: one to take care of and distribute updates of the summary; one to identify and catalogue sources and the data in them; and one to create an index. In the index, you make a separate entry for each person, note which people with the same name turn out to be the same person, incorporate the 'two' into one, and summarize known data. Okay! It is a lot of work, and I really know that as that's how I built up what I know about the Flewellings. At least with computers, making amendments should be a whole lot easier.
In the index, you may want to note the numbers I have been using. There is an explanation of this system on my web page, but I didn't quite use it properly here. I should have done it family by family. You may have to add 'prefixes' for each disconnected family.
What you seem to have here is a very good nucleus to build on; sort of a home base with others can connect; and there seem to be a lot of other people interested in this particular area. In particular, that lady with the book: can she transcribe or abstract relevant parts?
Eventually, actually right away, you will find disconnected family groups; but eventually, they will start coming together. The objective should be to define the family up to about 1850 when the census returns started. After that, it gets easier; you just have to plug at it.

Some of your letters since last time.
Tom:
Thank you for all of the good information you have forwarded to me.
I recognize Deacon John Jacox who married Sarah Hazzard. He was a most colorful character.
Mary
Lois, and all,
I have a huge WORD file, in which I have pasted all sorts of
Jaycocks primary records, as I come upon them.
It takes me a while to find anything. But think I found this
Thomas.
Lois sent information on will:
"THOMAS JACOCKS of New York; Will dated February 9, 1817,
Probated April 8, 1817
Heirs:
Son, William and his wife, Maria and their son Benjamin Desobry
Jacocks;
Gitty, wife of brother, Benjamin;
children of son, James L. Jacocks, deceased, Mary, William,
Samuel and Thomas;
Mrs. Christine Brown, wife of Benjamin Brown of Mount Pleasant;
Mrs. Henderson, widow;
brother, Benjamin. (Mentions late wife as Jemima.)
Executor: John Disbrow.
Witness; Sam Littlefield, J.B. Hutching, Charles Dickimson,
Junr. and James Disbrow.,
Thomas Jacocks d. @ age 55 (NY Weekly Museum, July 15, 1817 b ca

Child: James la Due Reference ID: 663

**SO, I think this Thomas, married then to Jemima Sherwood might
be the Thomas making this will, and James La Due the late James
L. mentioned in the will.
"William Jacocks of New York, (son of Thomas)Builder. Will dated
February 20, 1817. Probated March 27, 1817.
Heirs:
wife, Maria (Schoonmaker)
son, Benjamin Desobry Jacocks;
William Jacocks, son of John Jacocks of Poughkeepsie;
**This William son of Thomas, gives as an heir, "William son of
John of Poughkeepsie". Does anyone have a guess who this might
be?
John Jaycocks, who married Caty Luckey 17 March 1768 in
Poughkeepsie might be one idea. I have no children for them. He
was the brother of Francis, Jr. who married Maritie Wiltsie by
my reckoning, so his son would have been this man's cousin of
sorts, (if Thomas, his father was the son of Francis and
Maritie.
Sarah M. Hoisted, Edward and William, children of Widow Hacker
of New York;
William Henry Schoomaker, brother of wife."
ALSO
In IGI there is a "Thomas F. Jaycocks of Mt. Pleasant, born abt.
1755"
This MIGHT indicate that he was the son of a man with the first
name starting with F. You see this a lot with the Jaycocks men,
because their names were so confusing! Thomas son of Francis was
born in 1762, as was this
Thomas. He had a brother Benjamin that was married to Gertrude.
Does anyone know if GITTY is a diminutive for Gertrude??
I tried an Ancestry search using only the first name Gitty and
found, not one married to Benjamin, but one married to a Thomas,
and in New Hackensack as well. This Thomas is called Thomas T.
Jaycocks, meaning possibly
Thomas son of Thomas.
Gitty HAIS
Marriage(s):
Spouse:
Thomas YACOCKS

Dutchess, New York
Also found a bunch of kids for them born in New Hackensack, and
the Thomas in this will has James La Due in New Hackensack, so
both of these Thomas Jaycocks lived in the same location.

None of these children's names match the children of Thomas in
the will, but thought I'd throw them into the general Jaycocks
pot anyway.
Just putzing around, but thought you'd like this much of an
update.
Sharilyn
Tom and all,
I'm confused by what you have sent. I recognize the parts about
Francis and Caecilia, and their issue, and the material I sent
you on Francis "Jr"
and Maritie Wiltsie, and her people, BUT I don't see how we have
come to the conclusion that the Thomas in the will Lois mentions
was the Thomas
that was the second son of William Jaycocks and Gertrude
Lossing?
Can you please explain to me how we got there? Thanks so much.
I'm a little thick in the head sometimes.
According to Donna Ewins in her long article on the
Lassen/Lossing family that appeared in the NYG&BR this was the
information on this Thomas Jaycocks, son of William and Gertrude
Lossing:
98. THOMAS4 JACOCKS (GERTUDE3 LASSEN, WILLIAM2, PIETER
PIETERSE1) was born September 22, 1762 in Loonenburg, NY. He
married MARY TOBIAS May 04, 1785 in Reformed Dutch Church, New
Hackensack.
Children of THOMAS JACOCKS and MARY TOBIAS are:
i. WILLIAM5 JACOCKS.
ii. RUTH JACOCKS.
iii. CHRISTOPHER JACOCKS.
iv. GERTRUDE JACOCKS.
The name of the wife is the same, but the children's names are
very different. Do we know the name of the wife of Thomas son of
Francis and Maritie Wiltsie? He was also born in 1762.
Regards,
Sharilyn
Hi Tom,
The last three in my husband's line should read:
WILLIAM WILBUR JACOX b. May 30, 1868 Jefferson Co. Pa.
CLARENCE DAVID JACOX b. January 30, 1891 Brookville, Jefferson Co. Pa.
EDWARD EATON JACOX b. (living person, date omitted) Edmonton, Alberta (my husband)
No, I did not know Doug Van Kleek but when I visited Hiliary Foskett about a year ago she mentioned the Van Kleek's and if I remember correctly, I think she said that a Mrs. Van Kleek lives here in Victoria.
Are you in B.C. as well Tom?
Regards,
Marion

The following are some notes that I found. In have tried to indicate where I found them. Some of these people may be very helpful.
Family History Jacocks
Paul R. Smith to Shelton F. Jacocks, Sr. 19OCT2000
Hello Shelton --
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to help you much. My JACOCKS line daughtered out with the marriage of Ann Elizabeth JACOCKS to William Speller RHODES in 1817 in Bertie Co., NC. If you want more, just let me know at [email protected].
My line is fairly well documented. I descend from Thomas Jacocks:
"Thomas Jacocks, whose will was probated in Perquimans Precinct in 1692, was the first of the Jacocks name to appear in Northeastern North Carolina. References of Perquimans County are made to his as having performed legal transactions as early as 1688 and off and on until his death. His home was at Little River, a few miles from the Northern Shore of the Arlbermarle Sound and about 40 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. He arrived, apartently, with means to acquire lands and other assets and to become established as a responsible citizen in Durant's Neck, the place of his residence. Thomas and Ann, his wife, were the founders of the Jacocks family in North Carolina and their given names were and still are used by generations of descendents. They left one son, Jonathan, who was 6 years old in 1692 when his father died."
There were certainly slaves in the Jacocks family:
"Jonathan Jacocks II was born in 1718. The portion of his father's estate which he inherited is not known except that he inherited 1/5 of the personal property including slaves."
. . .so you may well have ancestry who got their name from my ancestors. I hope this has helped a bit.
Good Hunting -- Paul
[This Thomas Jaycocks who shows up in North Carolina I suspect is the son of Thomas and Ruth from Hempstead who died at Passayunk. I saw, but can't find, a notice that such a Thomas had married twice; once a wife from Boston, and second a wife in the Carolinas. TAM]

Several mentions of Jeacock family in Nottingham, England. I include these because the family of Francis and Grace in Stratford-upon-Avon appears to have been the only and first there. There seems to be up to three generations to the north and east of Startford, but it is possible that the family came to Warwickshire from elsewhere. If so, these may be clues.

Looking for others who are researching the Jaycox, Jacoks, or Jacok families of New York. Particularly interested in the ancestors and descendants of a Francis JACOKS, who married 1756 in Dutchess County, NY, to Mary WILTSIE, b: abt 1738, in Queens, Long Island, NY, (dau of Hendrick Theunisen WILTSIE). Their children: William (1757), Frans (1759), Hester (1760), Thomas (1762), Benjamin (1763), Maria (1766), Ezekiel (1768), John (1770). I'm also interested in finding information on a Captain William JAYCOCK, who commanded a company in Colonel John Freer's fourth Dutchess County regiment. My ancestor, Captain Barnardus SWARTWOUT, took command of this same company on April 28, 1777. His son, Barnardus Jr., b: 1761, joined his father's company at the young age of 16. Barnardus Jr. married 1778 in Wappinger's Creek, Dutchess County, NY to Mary BROWER (Brouwer), daughter of Cornelius BROUWER and Mary ARCHER (Archert?). Their son Robert SWARTWOUT was born 1779. Robert's daughter, Caroline SWARTWOUT, b: 1801, Esopus, Ulster County, NY, married William JAYCOX (my g-g-g-grandfather) in 1820, and they subsequently lived in Syracuse, NY. I believe this William JAYCOX (Jaycocks) is connected to those mentioned previously.

There is the possibility of a 14th child. Gilbert cousin Robert Mutrie found information about Jane Gilbert (1791-1851) who married Lewis Winan that leads him (and now me) to believe she may be a long-lost child! Any information about Jane is greatly appreciated.
