The family of John & Helen Jarvis/Jervis (sic) in the Village of Mallion 1851 census are direct line ancestors of my husband. The "servant" Marion Jarvie was most likely Helen Jarvie (nee Patrick)'s unmarried aunt. She appears with her sister Jean in subsequent censuses with Helen. John left Scotland with his brother Walter in 1853 to go to Ballarat, Australia. Their sisters Mary, Christina, Martha and Janet also left for Australia between 1858 and 1866. Mary and Martha joined their husbands. Christina was a widow and remarried in Australia. Janet married her cousin Thomas in Melbourne in 1862. Walter's wife and children joined him in 1857. John's wife, Helen declined to join him in Australia. Their child Archibald Jarvie b. 1854 was born after John left the country. After 15 years (1868) John remarried in Ballarat. He died in Ballarat 1899. Helen Patrick died in Scotland in 1905.
