Thank you for the info, I wonder how the name was pronounced that sometimes it was German or Germany.
My Turney was born 1826 in Smith Co TN..
1850 census in Arkansas he is Jarman
1860 census in Arkansas he is Germany
in all the Arkansas land records he is Jarmon
Your James in 1830 census was age 30-40 so that makes him born 1790-1800 - right?
I just noticed something interesting in what you gave me - in the 1850 McNairy Co TN census on Anday Jarman in his house is John Gillum age 18 born TN (which would mean born around 1832)
Now Peter Turney born 1795 is the one with the son Jarman/Jarmon born 1826.....two of his brothers married Gilliam sisters.Jacob B Turney SR born 1771 married Nancy Gilliam who died in TN and then Jacob went to Arkansas around 1840.Isaac Turney born 1777 married Mary Gilliam, he died in 1829 in TN and about 1836 his widow Mary Gilliam Turney and family moved to Arkansas.
so what we have is:
A Turney names a son Jarmon born 1826, this Jarmon has 2 aunts who are Gilliams.
A John Gillum born around 1832 in 1850 he is living in house of Andy Jarman.
There is a connection somehow I think.
The Turney/Gilliam group also connects to Adams and Hancock but they moved to Tn from Patrick Co VA around 1803 or so.
The Gilliams and Turneys were all early settlers in eastern TN - say 1774 or so.In other words, the Turney children grew up around the Gilliam children and there were two marriages then between the families.Perhaps Jarman family was also in same area....
I looked at early TN tax index and found:
GARMAIN, WilliamDavidson Co 1805
GARMAN, RobertDavidson Co 1805
GARMON, JohnBedford Co 1812
JARMAN, EzekielDavidson Co 1805

JARMEN, RobertWilson Co 1804
JARMEN, ShadrachWilson Co 1804
JARMON, Robt.Humphreys Co 1812
GERMAIN, JosephWilson Co 1801
GERMAN, DanielWilson Co 1810,Wilson 1815

GERMAN, StephenMaury Co 1811,Maury 1816

so all that is not any help.
Let me know if you trace your family back further than 1830s.
