Jarman Family Genealogy Forum
The Frank Jarman you ask about was my grandfather. He indeed was a forester who lived on the slopes of Devil's Peak in Cape Town. He planted many of the exotic trees on the mountain, for which I believe he is now heavily criticized. He was married to Catherine Rookwood, who was at one time a ladies maid to the De Villers Graaf family in the Cape. They had two children, my father, Frank Edwin Harry Jarman, born June 12, 1900, deceased July 1989, and Kathleen Jarman. My father was actually born in the blockhouse you refer to.
My grandfather was killed in a shooting accident in the Somerset West area, I think around 1905 (I have the date somewhere). My grandmother eventually remarried someone named Sneddon and went to Australia with Kathleen.
My father bhad four children, Frank, Joan, Maureen and myself, Robert.
If you want some further info on Frank I can put you in touch with my sister Joan, who wrote a letter to the Cape Argus several years ago dealing with the criticism of my grandfather re: planting exotic trees on Table Mountain.
