Jaques - DERTHICK connections (2 of them!)
While working with a second cousin on our Jaques ancestry, we identified an "Aunt Harriet Derthick" in an old photo album as a Harriet JAQUES, born 2 August 1795 on Staten Island, who married a John DERTHICK who was born 22 June 1873 in CT and died 4 Feb. 1860 in Richfield Springs, Otsego Co., New York. We found them in the 1850 census living next door to a Moses Jaques, 1773-1851, who was residing with his son Moses Jaques Jr., 1802?-1855. (Also, Harriet had a son Moses Derthick who died young.)
We think this Jaques family must be ours, that Harriet was a sister to our Albert Jaques, 1803-1875, and Moses Sr. was likely their father. By tracing Harriet's Derthick family, we've discovered several connections to families on Staten Island. For one example, Harriet's son John Derthick (1827-1909, and the 5th John Derthick in a row in the Derthick line) married Elouise DeGROOT, who was the daughter of Albert DeGroot (1810?-1884) who was the son of Garret DeGroot and Sarah JAQUES. This Sarah (1785-1854) was the daughter of David Jaques (1745-1819) and Mary FREEMAN (1751-1832) who lived on Staten Island after moving there from Woodbridge, New Jersey. We think Sarah Jaques (1785-1854) and Moses Jaques, Sr. (1773-1851) were siblings.
But wait, there's another DERTHICK connection. The husband of Harriet (Jaques) Derthick had a brother named Dudley Otis Derthick. This brother had a daughter named Mary Ann Derthick who was born 25 January 1808 at Warren, Herkimer Co., NY which is just north of the county line with Otsego County, not far from Richfield Springs. This Mary Ann Derthick married on 8 March 1831 to an Isaac JAQUES. They had two daughters, Charlotte Jane Jaques (1832-1891) and Mary Louise Jaques (1835-?). Isaac then died in October 1837 and Mary Ann (Derthick) remarried on 24 March 1846 to a Jacob HOUSE of Columbia, Herkimer Co., NY and they had three more children before Jacob died at the end of 1853. Mary Ann (Derthick) (Jaques) House then died in 1861 at Columbia, Herkimer Co.
So now my question is, how does the Isaac Jaques who died in October 1837 fit into the Jaques family? I did notice there was an Isaac Jaques of perhaps a previous generation from Staten Island, who had a daughter who married a Muir (I think), who had a child who married into the Tappan family, which I think is a Staten Island family. But I'm pretty sure it's a different Isaac.
Moses Jaques, Sr. appears to have been enumerated in Warren, Herkimer Co. in the 1810 and/or 1820 censuses. Is he for sure the Moses who later lived in Richfield Springs?
Any information about Moses Jaques (1773-1851) and his parents, siblings, wife, and children would be very welcome.
