Before you go to Japan, you need to get your birth certificate. It shows your parent's name to you can prove you're a child of them. You also need to get your parent's birth certificate so that you can prove your parents are your grandparents children. Birng these documents with you when you go to Japan.

Then you go to a city office and ask for the family register. The fee is not so high. Probably less than $10 per document. But you need someone who can read and write Japanese.
