THERE WERE 2 PETER S JANUARY

So i was tripping through the new posings last wednesday or so, and I happened upon the message by Jeanne about the 2 Peter Januarys, but instead of reading them right away, i printed them, as i did all the new postings, to read on the trip home (I had accompanied my mother to her work in Philadelphia).
About two hours later I was sitting in the major train station in Philly browsing what I had printed and I began to read the messages by Jeanne about the Versailles and Lexington Peters.I started feeling happy because i recognized the names and dates, then at the end of her message about Versailles Peter,
she noted that his parents were unknown.Well that set me back for a minute.I sat there and frowned, because I knew that there were 2 Peters, one whos parents arent known, but my Peter was surely a child of Thomas January.I have it in my FTM that way, my grandmother taught it to me that way and I would be darned if it isnt true.So i set that message aside, a little perturbed but determined not to think about it again
because I hate hitting that button in my FTM "break link to parent" almost as much as i hate being wrong. Then i looked at the other listing by Jeanne, the one about Lexington Peter, and i began wondering if maybe the lady who has been researching the line for about 30 years longer the I had could be right...
I pulled out a few family trees i had taken in case I got bored listening to my mom talk about CPT codes.. One of those was the family tree by Thomas Duke, who is of the Maysville, KY branch of the January's.Sure enough, ahead of the name Peter January, was a line connected to THomas January, with a little arrow coming out that says Thomas hasnt been proven to be Peters father.Yeah, ive seen that note a hundred times, but i always brushed it off-- heck, if my grandmom says Thomas is Peters father, he is. We'll ignore the fact the my grandmother, although one of my favorite people, has a hard time telling me who her gggrandmother is, let alone her gggggggrandfather or whatever Thomas would be.
I sat on that bench in the middle of 30th street station, and missed my train because I was concentrating on ignoring what was right in front of me (the genealogy, not the train).I just sat there and stared at those blasted papers with what I can only imagine was a crushed look on my face because some kindly man next to me patted my arm and told me that it could only get worse before it got better. That made me feel really great, of course.
Since seeing the family tree by Thomas Duke clearly for the first time, Ive begun to remember instances where people have sent me their family trees from Lex Peter and Ive wondered what in the world they were talking about-- why they insisted that Lex Peter was Thomas' son.
So, with drooping shoulders, I am going into my FTM tonight, to add a little clause, that however much id like to claim Thomas, Thomas, Pierre and Pierre as mine, along with all the cousins who came with them-- the LA cousins like Jim Earl who has been so helpful with the Pierre-who-went-to-Louisiana line, the Woodwards who supposedly came from Phillippe-who-went-to-VA, and have been making me crazy since I cant find any of their children, etc.Ive also decided that id rather burn everything i have than give up on the Pierre, Pierre, Thomas, THomas line that ive claimed as mine for the past 2 years, so ill continue with that family, as well as my own newly stunted family tree that once stretched back to France, now only goes to, well, Pennsylvania.
So I am listening to the man from the train station, and agreeing that it will get worse, because I am now publicly admitting the err in my ways, and even worse-I need to hit that stupid break link to parent button.
Well if anybody has read this far, id like to announce my hope that one big pig-headed mistake is the limit for amateur genealogists.
Thank you to all who have listened to my venting,
Adrienne Gallagher
