Dear Doris,I think we must have a common ancestor. My father was Oscar Schulz born in 1896 and was stranded in the US when WW2 broke out. His mother was Johanne Hermine Eggling. My father and his cousin Fred operated a large garage and automobile repair on Fresh Pond Road. They never sold cars.
The information is from my personal notes.I have more. Please let me knowanything you have about the Eggling or the Poppe families.
John Schulz (usually called Jack)
--------------------------
Hermine Eggeling was always called 'Tante Mimi' by Oscar Schulz and his family. She was his aunt, and she helped him get established in this country.
When Oscar Schulz came to this country in Nov, 1914, she provided a home for him with her own three children. In the 1920 census, Oscar Schulz is shown as a nephew living with the Janssen family. In the 1920 census, the last name is given as 'Janson', and 'Hermana' is shownas the head of the family. These clearly are misspellings.Others in the household are son Fred (age 18), daughters Elise (17) and Marion (13), and Oscar Schulz (22). The name of 'Elise' used by the census taker is properly Elsa.
The 1920 census shows Tante Mimi to have entered the US in 1893, and naturalized in 1900 (through her spouse, Henry). The Janssen children all were born in NY, Oscar in Germany.Oscar had citizenship pending, according to the census. In the 1920 census, Fred and Oscar are said to be mechanics at a machinery shop, Marion and Hermine to be not employed, and Elsa to be an operator for the NY Telephone Company. Marion was still at school. The microfilm from the 1920 census is identified as T1062, roll 351.The entry is in Vol 313, e.d. 415, sheet 20, line 31. The address was 2588 Madison St, Queens, NYC (Ridgewood).
In a letter to me dated June 29, 1993, Marion Janssen wrote: ' (I am) enclosing a copy of one German article I received a long time ago from a distant cousin of mine, Ted Conrad, plus a copy of his accomplishments as an architect and preservationist. The German article was helpful to me in putting information together about the Poppes.Ted's grandmother was my mother's Aunt and she sponsored her entry into the country to America in 1893.My mother knew my father, Henry Janssen, in Germany (Bremerhaven) when they were youngsters. My father served in the German Navy and when he finished his term of duty he cameto America and married mother in 1900.
'As children we often visited Ted's grandmother and her family in Jersey City Heights, N.J., We called her 'Oma' - she had three daughters - Adoline - Ted'smother, Dora - one son Alfred, and Henry - no children.I think Ted has two daughters'.
The Janssen family is listed in the 1910 census. The location is Hempstead Town, Election District 13, enumeration district 1115, page 23A, lines 12 to 17.Fritz Eggeling is shown as living with the family. In that 1910 census, the number of years of marriage is given as 10. It showsthe year of immigration of Henry to be 1897, and Hermine to be 1893.It showsHenry to be a naturalized citizen, with no citizenship assigned to Hermine.Fritz Eggling is shown to be 70 years old, and in the citizenship box is the notation 'Pa', which means a petition has been filed.Henry is shown to be 38 yrs old, and is a merchant in the delicatessen business. They rent their home.
Also the 1910 census shows Fritz to have immigrated to US in 1855 (this can't be correct; perhaps 1895 was intended), to be a widower, and his age to be 70.
Tante Mimi died on January 25, 1965.At that time she was living at Meadowbrook Hospital in Lynbrook. Her death was registered in Dist. No. 2950, Register No. 269.
