David:
My son just entered the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He went through a rigorous physical examination in April and in May we were notified he was overweight and would have to lose 50+ pounds to qualify for admission.
My son is 6'7 1/2" inches tall and weighs 207. He has less than five percent body fat.
To make a long story short, the Army (DOBMERB) had him listed as 6'1" and 275 pounds.
It took us weeks to get that straightened out.
The Army did not measure its recruits during the Civil War. Everything was approximate - especially towards the end of the war in 1864. One person's opinion. And then JLC simply grew - as many males do. He probably also lied about his height in later years - as many males do.
Case in point: David Robinson - the NBA player - substantially grew while at the Naval Academy. Almost a foot from age 18 on.
The birthdate is another thing. If this was the only record of JLC's birth then I would say there was a problem but JLC himself recorded his birth in his diary and elsewhere.
