Last March, two descendants of Theodore N. Courtney aka Theodore N. Haun, and a descendant of the man known in Texas as James L. Courtney (my great-grandfather), submitted oral swabs for the purpose of STR DNA testing to determine if Courtney and Haun shared a common ancestor. These men are said have been brothers. On July 20, Colleen (CeCe) Taylor, posted the following message (#5434) on this forum: “DEFINITIVE PROOF: JLC was not JWJ.” Taylor reported that STR DNA testing performed by “Dr. Mechthild Prinz, Assistant Director of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, proved that James Lafayette Courtney and his brother, Theodore Haun, descend from the same father.” Prinz’s report showed that the DNA extracted from the known descendant of James L. Courtney was different from the DNA extracted from the two known descendants of Theodore N. Haun. This difference was explained as being a mutation. In the following posting (#5545) by Kathy Reynard on July 24, Dr. Prinze said, “Normally the occurence of a difference in the DNA types would have meant that the two families are definitely not related. The fact that the two profiles are rare, those mutations have been described for DYS385, and that there are three generations that passed on either side of the family caused me to conclude that the difference is no exclusion of relatedness but likely to have been a mutation.” According to my dictionary, definitive is defined as: “Bringing to an end; conclusive and unalterable; final.” Prinz’s report definitive? I don’t think so. A DNA expert that was retained to examine Dr. Prinz’s findings has concluded that there is a difference in the Courtney/ Haun DNA because they WEREN’T related. This finding lends support to my original claim that my great-grandfather was not James L. Courtney, and that he very well may have been Jesse James. I am going to dedicate an entire chapter to Dr. Prinze’s report, as well as Colleen (CECE) Taylor‘s, Linda Snyder‘s, and Kathy Reynard’s errors in their conclusions in my next book. AND I would like to take this opportunity to thank CeCE, and the others behind the scenes, for having this test performed. It was very beneficial to my research and only supports my claim that my great-grandfather and Haun did not share a common ancestor. Based on the personal, slanderous remarks and innuendoes that have been posted on this forum, I have come to the conclusion that I would be better served focusing my attention on my new evidence, instead of wasting my time(or the forum's time) on individuals who are not interested in learning new evidence about Jesse James or his gang . No constructive exchanges can be had with these individuals. Therefore, I will not be on this forum for a while. If anyone is interested in contacting me, please E-mail me. My time will be devoted to completing the revised edition of Jesse James Lived & Died In Texas. It will hopefully be completed soon. Many thanks David for all of your support, and the valuable time you spent in this endeavor. It is appreciated. Sincerely, Betty Dorsett Duke
