Linda,

I’ll agree with you about high school history. It was boring because of the way it was presented. But in a way genealogy is history.

I’ll try and clear up some of your confusion about my claim. I believe that Grandpa was Jesse James and that he took the alias of James L. Courtney. There was a real James L. Courtney, but Jesse James and James L. Courtney were two different people. Dianah Courtney aka Dianah Haun and Zerelda James Samuel were also two different people.

There are many clues that Grandpa was not James L. Courtney the Union soldier. Grandpa was around 6’4”-- the real James L. Courtney was listed as 5’10”(at the age of eighteen) on his military records. Most men don’t grow 6” after the age of eighteen. Grandpa had black hair -- the real James L. Courtney had sandy brown hair. Grandpa, in his own words, said that he stole the name of James L. Courtney. Do these two men sound like the same man to you? They sure don’t to me.

I also prefer not fighting with people, but I’ll defend myself when attacked. I’m sure that you have helped many people and will continue to do so. This controversy about Grandpa has caused friction in the family for many years; it did not start with me. You claim that you don’t have a personal stake in this... Well, I do. It’s my family. You’re right about a book not making one rich, I write because I enjoy it, and because it may clear up the cloud mystery that’s been hanging over this family for years.

Linda, even though you’ve advised people to “not waste their money on my book,” I do wish you luck with yours. I’m always interested in the Courtneys and Hauns, but I’m never stopping my research on the James family.

Regards,

Betty Duke, Author of Jesse James Lived & Died IN Texas
