The book was rushed into print sometime in April or May of 1882 and repudiated by Zerelda James in May due to it saying Jesse and Frank were outlaws. As it was supposedly dictated by jesse's wife and mother they could have both been charged with accesory after the fact so it made sense for them to discredit the book, and certainly for frank to insist they do so.
