Hello Connie,

Jesse and Zee were married, as you stated, with family and friends present, at night. Naturally they were in hiding at that time, and no doubt it was never recorded. However, there were newspaper accounts, and a few interviews with family after Jesse died. Zerelda Samuel, in the Liberty Tribune (Nov 16, 1900), obituary for Zee Mims James, stated they had been married in 1874.

It is mentioned in the book, "Some Records of the Albright Family", on page 84. It is also recorded in Jesse's father's Bible, which can be viewed by anyone, at the James Farm. I have photographed all five pages, of the entries in this Bible, so have seen it for myself.

They married 24 Apr 1874, in the home of one of Zee's sisters, by an Uncle Rev. William James. Personally, I cannot see any reason they would claim Jesse and Zee were married, if she indeed was married to Wood Hite. However, I could understand the opposite, in saying she was married to Wood Hite, to hide her marriage to Jesse James.

Linda, KCMO
