Hey there!

OK.....One point at a time.

On the dates of the sermon and his departure...MY mistake. The sermon was on March 31. The LETTER was dated two weeks later. I just messed up on the dates while writing the message. He left April 4th.

Again, the letter was written in 1850 by a lady from Haynseville (three miles north of New Hope church) to her sister in Weston.

Most of the wagon trains from the Kansas City area to California took six to eight weeks...depending on weather. Check the records.

I did not say EXACTLY when they arrived in California because I haven't seen anything with an exact date.

You said that "he supposedly went with his congregation". I never said that. And to my knowledge, no one else ever has either. What I DID say was that he went with some friends and neighbors. There was a fairly large group of Clay Countians heading west...including a few families. In fact, they ASKED him to go. They wanted one of their ministers to go with them. Again, check it out. You'll find that most of those wagon trains that contained a group of people from one location generally had a minister with them. Robert James was not even their first choice! They had asked a Reverend Daniel Patton, but he had graciously declined. Whether or not Robert James was cruel, unwise, or just plain stupid to leave his wife and kids to travel half way across the country to preach the word of God is not for me to say...nor is it for you.

As far as what he died of, the general consensus is cholora. That was the main killer in those camps.

You said that there was so much confusion about WHERE he died. Where is the confusion? I have only seen one place mentioned, and I have read about everything published on the subject. Hangtown...later renamed Placerville. Northeast of Sacramento. Not much confusion here, either.

As to a grave marker placed by "the faithful and grieving members" as you put it....DAMN, David! This was a mining town in 1850! If anything, they might have put up a board with your name on it! And that wouldn't last very long, anyway! Besides, as I already said, he did NOT go out there with his congregation! Check into a few things! People were buried QUICK back then, especially when they died of something that could kill you. "Records" just weren't too common in 1850...especially out there!

Lastly, you never answered MY question about "who" raised these suspicions in the first place! I've never heard ANYTHING about the suspicions you raised until YOU raised them! Come on, David!!! Where did this get started.

OK. You and I have had some interesting conversations, but I am going to be very honest with you. If I make you mad, I'm sorry. This is going to be the LAST message I post on THIS subject. I still get a little ribbing from friends and associates about my continuing "debates" about the Courtney Controversy. That's OK. I can take it. But this subject is just REDICULOUS! I would really like to know who came up with this one! I guess you'll figure that I am "copping out", bailing out or backing out, but I just think THIS subject is a TOTAL waste of my time! I have better things to do.

Later!

Phil
