David!YOu must be getting bored without all the "Courtney Confusion"!Concerning the final years of Robert James, you "challenged" anyone to prove one theory over the other. You should know by now that I can't turn down a good challenge! Here is what I have......
Reverend James preached his last sermon on the second Sunday of April, 1850.He stressed to the congregation that he was NOT going to California in search of gold, but to spread the word of God.He left on the wagon train four days letter. In addition to information in the Liberty Tribune, this is also confirmed in a letter written by a lady who was AT that last sermon. It was written to her sister just a few days after the sermon.I have a copy.Several individuals from Clay County were on this wagon train, and most wrote letters back home during their trip and upon their arrival to California. At least two mentioned Robert James being among the party. This is pretty solid proof that he went to California in 1850.
It took them six weeks to get there.
On October 25, 1850, the Liberty Tribune printed a letter from a former Clay County resident who was in California. It told of the conditions in the California gold fields, and also reported the deaths of Robert James (on Aug 18th) and two other former Clay Countians. This was confirmed in another letter printed on February 14, 1851.
In the "Proceedings in the Probate Court of Clay County, Missouri in Re Estate of Robert James, Deceased"(that's DECEASED, David!), filed November 21, 1850.the court identified and recognized Robert S. James, "late of the County of Clay", as being deceased.According to the record, this was established by statements of individuals who "personally knew the deceased and had personal knowledge of his death."Pretty much indicates to me that the guy didn't come back from California!
PROOF?We have several letters from individuals NOT directly connected to or related to the family, and court documents. You're not going to find much more concerning something that happened 150 years ago about a person who was relatively insignificant (from a national perspective) at the time!!!
Your message states that "some suggest there was a cover-up and that he returned..."WHO???I'd really like to know who!!!Come on Dave! This is EXACTLY how and why we end up with all these "rumors" and speculation that just messes up everything that has been done by researchers over the past 100 years!!!No, David.I'm not mad or anything!I'd just like you to answer this one for me!Who came up with THAT off the wall theory!!!
I'll REALLY be waiting for THIS reply!
