7. ELIZEBETH6 ANDERSON (SAMUEL5, NOBLE4, WILLIAM?3, WILLIAM2, UNKNOWN1) was born March 30, 1820 in South Carolina/Georgia, and died May 10, 1875 in McClurg, Taney Co, Missouri. She married (1) UNKNOWN RHODES Bet. 1840 - 1843 in Taney Co., Missouri, son of DAVID RHODES and UNKNOWN. She married (2) DAVID B. GENTRY Abt. 1846 in Taney Co, Missouri, son of ALLEN GENTRY and MARGARET SHAVERS. She married (3) JAMES MATHES March 23, 1859 in Douglas Co, Missouri, son of DAVID MATHES and ELILZEBETH ALLEN.

Notes for ELIZEBETH ANDERSON:
1) Actual birthdate ?: The 1850 Census Taney Co., MO shows Elizabeth as 27 years old or born in 1823. In 1860 census- age 37 b. 1823 and 1870 census - 48 b. 1822. Depending on when the census was taken - usually June or after, and since her birth month is March, she had already had her birthday. It is very likely that on her cemetery stone, which reads b. March 20, 1820, the year is incorrect and should be 1822.

2) Elizebeth Mathes is buried in the Bethel Cemetary, McClurg, Taney Co., MO. Her gravestone has been altered by unknown persons from birthdate orig inscribed as Mar 30, 1830 to read Mar 30, 1820. Whether a mistake corrected at the time it was made, or someone later altering the date is unknown.

3) Actual deathdate? Elizabeth Mathis and James Mathis both signed a deed in 15 Jan 1877 selling 25 acres in Douglas Co., Campbell Twp to William Adams - so she was still living in 1877 and her tombstone reads that she died in 1875.

4) Elizabeth's only recorded marriage is the one to James Mathis in 1859. James Mathis was also on the 1850 census in Taney Co. married to an "M." with one daughter, Missouri Mathis, age 5. This child appears with James and Elizabeth on the 1860 census of Taney Co., MO, but is gone in 1870 and no record of her has been found.

5) In his Civil War Pension Request, Elizabeth's son, Allen Leander Gentry stated he "lost a 1/2 brother at the battle of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma." Because of this it is believed there was one other child, a male born to Elizabeth and her first husband, unknown Rhodes.

6) The 1850 Taney Co., MO census shows:
D. Jentry 22 (b. 1828) born TN, wife E. Jentry 27 (1823) born TN, daughters M.A. Jentry 7 (1843), M.J. Jentry 3 (1847), E.E. Jentry 1 (1849) all born MO. Note that Allen Leander Gentry does not appear on this 1850 census, even though he stated in his pension ap that his birthdate was 1849.

When David Gentry's mother, Margaret Gentry, died in 1872 - her estate settlement from the Stone Co., MO Court Records shows a list of her heirs. This list includes the children of the deceased David Gentry - Martha was not included on this list. David Gentry is presumed to have died about 1857 and Elizabeth then remarried to James Mathis in 1859. On the 1860 census her daughter Martha was living with uncle Allen Gentry jr. family as Martha Rhodes, her sister Milly Gentry was there also. Martha Rhodes married in 1862 to Wm. Stacey. He stated on his pension ap that he married Marthy An Rhodes in 1872, but we believe he erred by 10 years because there were children b. before the 1870 census. There is a gap between the birthdates of Martha Rhodes and Milly Gentry which makes this theory possible.
If it is true, that Elizabeth was married previously, then Elizabeth Anderson Rhodes did not m. David Gentry until 1846 when he would have been 18 years old to Elizabeth's 24 (b.1822). She was included in her father's household on the 1840 census and a survey record for 1846 Taney Co. published in the White River Quarterly shows a Rhodes family is living next door to Samuel Anderson. It is very possible this was Elizabeth and two children, Martha and also the unknown male son who died at the battle of Fort Gibson, OK in the Civil War.

There were other Rhodes families living in 1840-1860 Taney Co. and since a 5-10 year old male child named Rhodes was not living with Elizabeth and David Gentry on the 1850 census of Taney Co., it's possible this Rhodes son was living with grandparents or other family.

* I suspect that David was probably 25 on the 1850 census, if he actually was 22, then he was 18 when he married 23-26 year old Elizebeth Anderson in abt. 1846. The general belief is that David was born in 1828 from this 1850 census.

The "family tradition" from Margaret Gentry Stacey family relates that David "ran off with a German servant girl and then came home to die". This would have been between 1855, when his last daughter was born, and 1859 when the widow Elizebeth Gentry married an also newly widowed? neighbor, James Mathis. It is possible though that they were divorced as Allen Leander Gentry desc. say he had a brother West Gentry who lived in Oklahoma. German servant girls not being too numerous in early Taney Co. in 1850, this story unlikely.
No grave for David Gentry has been found in either Greene Co. or Stone Co.

They lived in household #329, his mother, the widow Elizebeth Mathis, lived next door in household #330. However there was one child born to this first marriage - Missouri Mathis, age 5 (b. 1855) is on the 1860 census and she was not #2 wife Elizabeth's child.

He and Elizabeth then sold this land in 1877 to William Adams. It is located at Roy, MO across from the Johnson Cemetery. William Adams was married to Sarah Jane Ratledge and their daughter Sarah Adams married to John Allen Gentry, son of Margaret Gentry Stacey - her firstborn child by neighbor John Hartin. John Allen Gentry never lived with his mother, his Grandmother Elizabeth Mathes raised him.

8. SARAH JANE6 ANDERSON (SAMUEL5, NOBLE4, WILLIAM?3, WILLIAM2, UNKNOWN1) was born April 22, 1826 in Pendleton Co., South Carolina, and died January 20, 1884 in Stone Co, Missouri. She married ALLEN GENTRY, JR Abt. 1841 in Taney Co, Missouri, son of ALLEN GENTRY and MARGARET SHAVERS.

Notes for SARAH JANE ANDERSON:
Sarah Anderson's birth and death from cemetary stone in the Gentry Cemetary, situated 2 miles So. of Galena, Stone Co., MO. She was probably only 15 years old when she married Allen Gentry jr. about 1841 in Taney Co., MO.

1860 census - age 30, b.TN (1830)
1870 census - age 44 b. SC (1826)
1880 census - age 54 b. SC f.b. GA mb GA (1826)

Since we know where Samuel was in 1826 - either SC or GA it's probable Sarah was born in SC. Samuel appears in court records in Rabun Co. in 1829 and by 1830 he is in Monroe Co., TN. In 1880 census her daughter Margaret says her mother was b. SC.

After Sarah died, Allen married her sister, the twice widowed, Martha Anderson Massey Moore on May 18, 1885. When Martha died in 1894, Allen waited a few years, then in 1899 at the age of 85 he married Mrs. Nancy Martin.

Sources:
Goodspeeds "Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region", pg. 601-602, gives account of the Gentry family. States that " Allen Gentry jr. came to Missouri as a young boy in 1836 and settled on the James River near Galena. Owned 367 acres in a bend of the James River, two miles SW of Galena. During the Civil War he served on the Home Guard, then enlisted in the 7th MO Cav of Valparaiso, Co. H as a private. He was in a number of battles. Still suffers from the wounds he received in the war and carries two bullets that he received in one battle. He was shot in the head and partly lost his hearing in one ear. He served on the first jury in Stone County." Note: He was 17 years old in 1836, so not necessarily a "young boy".

She married (1) UNKNOWN ROBINSON. She married (2) WILLIAM COLUMBUS ANDERSON Abt. 1865 in Brown County, Texas, son of WILLIAM ANDERSON and JANE SCRUGGS.

Notes for WILLIAM COLUMBUS ANDERSON:
William Anderson, because of his name and where he lived in Missouri, was mistaken for "Bloody Bill" Anderson, the outlaw who rode with Quantrill's Raiders. He was nearly killed when a shot aimed at him, missed and instead killed another man. After that he decided it was a good idea to move to Texas.

His descendents still believe he was the infamous outlaw, even though the outlaw was shot in Missouri after many killings were attributed to him and his followers. The outlaw's bloody death was shown in newspapers of the day and several books on the history of the SW Missouri raiders relate his murderous trail and end. So it is hard to believe the two men were the same person - the story does persist with descendents and they state that Wm. C. himself stated it was so.

Notes for MARTHA ANN RHODES: Martha was previously thought to be a daughter of David and Elizabeth Anderson Gentry, however, the estate settlement of David's mother Margaret Gentry named David's other children, but did not name Martha - so this information along with the fact that Elizabeth was older than David has led us to believe that Martha was a daughter of Elizabeth and a husband previous to David with the last name of Rhodes.

From Stacey researcher, Mary Johnson, who sent the following to Carol Clouse of Bend, OR:
"The North Arkansas Star" Berryville, Arkansas - February 10, 1906, pg. 3, col. 3
Mrs. William Stacy who lived with her son John Stacy one mile East of town, died on Monday morning of paralysis
She was the widow of the late William Stacy. The remains were buried at the Moore Cemetery seven miles South of Berryville.

William Stacy first applied for Invalid Pension in Stone Co., MO in 6 Nov 1884, age 38. He was described as being 5'5" tall, light complexion and hair with hazel eyes. He again applied on 11 July 1891 stating that he was 45 years old and a resident of Baxtar, Stone Co., MO.
He had enrolled 1 Mar 1864 in Company D,Sixteenth Regt, Missouri Cavalry and served 23 months. He was honorably discharged at Springfield, MO on 30 Jun 1865. In 6 Nov 1898 he filled out a questionaire stating he had married 1872 to Marthy An Rhodes at Forsyth, MO and naming his living children. I think he made an error on the date and it should have been 1862. The 1880 census shows the family with children birth starting 1864.
He filled out an affidavit 4 Aug 1897 from Berryville, Carroll Co.
Arkansas stating he missed previous documents sent to him in Stone Co., MO.
The final paperwork dated 11 Aug 1905 is a drop order to take him off the pension rolls because he had died on 25 Feb 1905. His pension number was 452,009.

At one time Julia & Joe Hale lived in Sylmar, CA where he operated the areator on the old aqueduct system that brought water from Northern, CA to the Los Angeles area. The water traveled a long way in a tunnel and then exited this in a cement channel with large rocks imbedded to make the water roll and splash down the incline on its way to the reservoir nearby. This was built on a hillside in Sylmar next to the old ridge route and was a refreshing sight to see on a hot day. It is no longer in operation as it was damaged by the 1971 earthquake.

Was a member of the 24 & 44 MO Reg. of Cavalry in the Civil War. Pension No. 30106.
Allen Leander Gentry filed for his pension based on his Confederate Civil War Service 21 Sept 1935. Stated he was drafted into the service from Springfield, MO in 1862 until the end of the war. He says he served as a private with his two cousins, Joe Conefox and Bob Massey. He served under Captain Curtis, Captain Moore, and several others. His affidavit of his service tells that he took part in the battle of Murfreesboro and was wounded twice there. He marched with the cavalry from Springfield, MO and took part in the battle at Ft. Gibson, OK and states "I had a half brother killed in that battle." He took part in a battle at Cross Hollow, OK and was wounded in the leg there. Was shot off his horse twice during the war and shot through the legs both times.
After the war he went to Stone Co., MO, married and lived there until 1887 when he moved to Lonoke, AR.
He stated his birthday was 10 November 1849, but he was not on the 1850 census of Taney Co and it is believed he may have lied about his age when he went into the service and so just held with that birthdate.

From the time I was small, early 40's, til they died. I do not have their death date, but believe they were buried in the Western Grove, Ark cemetery. My grandmother, Florence, lived in Bixby, OK. The thing I remember most about them, was that Uncle George never worked and was not the most pleasant person to be around, while Janie worked all her life and was one of the sweetest people I knew. I remember her as being a rather heavyset person, probably around 5/4'' with dark hair and graying as she got older, and she wore her hair braided and wrapped around her head kinda like a halo."

Margaret had son, John Allen Gentry in 1872 and a year later m. Jasper Stacey. The child, named John Allen Gentry, was raised by her mother, Elizebeth Anderson Rhodes Gentry Mathis.

Photos of Margaret and her husband Jasper Stacy are on file as well as many of the Stacey children. Jasper Stacey was a doctor.

Margaret's death certificate found as Nancy Stacey and incorectly states her birthday as 25 Dec 1853 in MO. Her father was David Gentry, mother Elizabeth. She died 17 Jan 1933 of Bronchial Pneumonia. Gladys Gentry Geisler told that Margaret had ridden in the back of a touring car all the way from Phoenix, Arizona to Ava, Douglas County, MO in December of 1932.

Notes for JOHN GABRIEL HARTIN:
Source: Oral history from Sarah Adams Gentry to her daughter, Gladys Gentry Geisler. Also, written information exists in the Jenkins/Stacey family (desc. of Margaret Gentry and Jasper Stacey) in the form of a handwritten note regarding John Gentry's parentage. This in possession of Diane Hansen of Glendale, AZ.

John Gabriel Hartin and Margaret Nancy Gentry were never married. They lived on neighboring farms in Roy, Douglas Co., MO. Margaret became pregnant in 1872 and named John Hartin as the father. Margaret's mother, Elizebeth (Anderson Gentry) Mathis, took Margaret across to the large Hartin farm to confront John's parents with the fact of the pregnancy and demand a marriage. Who she talked to, whether John or his parents, is not known, but the fact he had also fathered a child by his sister Amy was acknowledged and upon hearing this, Elizebeth Mathis took her daughter Margaret back home. She declared she would "rather raise the child myself" than leave Margaret in the Hartin household. Margaret's son John Allen Gentry was born later that year (1872).

John Hartin married to Nancy Hale in Douglas Co., MO and had 9 children. They are both buried in the Huffman Cemetery in Douglas Co. along with several of their young children and other Hartins.

Document: Marriage Record for John Hartin to Nancy Hale dated 26 April 1874 performed at home of George Hale in Douglas Co. and witnessed by Lewis Huffman and Jacob Huffman. JP was D.C. Walker and was filed for record on 14 Jan 1893 in Douglas Co., MO.

Marriage Notes for MARGARET GENTRY and JOHN HARTIN:
Margaret Gentry and John Gabriel Hartin were never married.
When Gladys Gentry Geisler asked her mother Sarah Adams Gentry why these two people never married, she said, "The story from Margaret Gentry Stacey was that when her mother found out she was pregnant and who the father was, she marched her across the field to the Hartin Farm to confront the parents of John and resolve the situation. Upon finding out that he had his sister pregnant also, Elizebeth turned and took Margaret back home again and stated she would raise the child herself."

When John Gentry was a year old his mother Margaret married Jasper Newton Stacey and moved to Kansas. When John cried for his grandmother Elizebeth, Jasper told Margaret to take him back and leave him there. She did and John then lived in the Mathis household even after Elizebeth died in 1875.

Notes for JOHN ALLEN GENTRY:
Documents: Death Certificates, Marriage Certificate, Adams family bible record and oral history.

John Allen Gentry, was the natural son of Margaret Nancy Gentry and John Gabriel Hartin. He was raised by his grandmother Elizebeth Anderson Gentry Mathis and her #2 husband James Mathis. He called his 1/2 uncle William A.B. Mathis, "Uncle Billy".

Family history relates John ran away from home at age 16 to the Indian Nation (OK) and returned to marry his neighbor Sarah Adams. He was underage at this time and James Mathis signed for him. John and Sarah Gentry lived on 5 acres of the Wm. Adams farm near Roy, Douglas Co., MO. Wm. Adams died in 1898 and within the next few years the combined families of Adams, Stacy and John and Sarah Gentry began the migration West.

John and Sarah Gentry left Douglas Co., MO and moved first to Waggoner Co., OK abt 1905, then to Darby, Ravalli Co., Montana by 1906. By 1910 they were back in Coweta, Waggoner Co., OK; 1912 back to Montana; in 1917 moved to Phoenix, Arizona and finally moved to San Fernando, California by 1923. They farmed mostly and in Arizona, John ran a 2nd hand store as well. When they moved, he would sell everything and they would take the train to the next destination. When they left Phoenix, they traveled in a family group in two touring cars and it took 4 days. They had several flat tires along the way and it was very hot. A small house was purchased in San Fernando, CA on 1 1/2 acres on the corner of Telfair & LaRue Streets. John then worked for a landscape company and Sarah and her daughters worked in the local "Packing House" canning fruit and vegetables. They raised their own vegetables and Sarah kept a large pen full of chickens which provided food and also she sold the eggs.

The 1880 census for Douglas Co., MO, Buchanan Twp. shows John Gentry as a "ward" in the James Mathis household.
John Gentry and Sarah Adams marriage certificate was filed in Douglas Co., MO Court records and copy on file.
John Gentry was a witness to the will of James Mathis in 1901 in Douglas Co., MO.

There is no specific signed document to prove John Gentry's parentage, but it was a known fact among all the related Gentry/Stacey/Adams families. Sarah Adams Gentry told her Granddaughter Pamela Geisler Smith this information for a school genealogy project in 1950 and Gladys Gentry Geisler related other information at a later date. Also the children of John Hartin and Nancy Hale knew John. Ollie Hartin visited the Gentry family in San Fernando. Correspondence with John's 1/2 sister Susan Sanders and her daughter Fay Guthery - mention John's parentage and also Martha Stacey Jenkins Spaulding's desc. who live in Phoenix, AZ have a handwritten note stating the circumstances of John's birth.
