Questions about Swedish naming and names

While tracing my family history, I can get to the early 1990's with Jacobson's. However, I cannot find them coming across from Sweden. I am using the Ellis Island site (looking for Paul/ludwig Jacobson, Maria Svenson, Sven Haraldson, Christina Johannisdatter, and more). What I have not been able to determine is when the naming turned from the automatic "Jacobs Son, Jacobs Daughter" to when they said "you are all Jacobson." I am stuck at the crossing...
