Hi Katherine, Thanks for the information. My John Thornton Edwards was b. Nov 1833 so he apparently does not belong to your family. Several relatives of mine were given Thornton as a middle name. An odd story has been handed down in the family that he was kidnapped by Indians and lived with them until he was about 18 and never knew what happened to his parents. Another, that later he traveled to California with a brother --possibly his twin -- named George Washington Edwards who disappeared in Salt Lake City. My first record of John T. (other than the date and place of birth he gave on census records) is when he married Maria (ne้ Churchill, from New York) Wilcoxen Lennington in Stephenson County Illinois, about 1858. I found a John and an Amos Edwards as heads of household before 1850 in Stephenson, and a young man named John Edwards living with a different family in 1850. Are any of your people connected with Churchill or Wilcoxen families? Did any of your people live in Stephenson County or go to California? Any strange stories about a young relative vanishing? Did Washington Edwards have a twin brother? My guess is that my John Thornton may have gone to Stephenson County to look for his family, or that he had relatives already there. I've had no luck tracing the other John and Amos Edwards. Neither are in the 1850 Stephenson county census. Good luck on your search. Thanks, Lorrell Notify Administrator about this message?
