Ralph Izard of Charleston
I am looking for an eighteenth century portrait of Ralph Izard 1741/42-1787 of Charleston, SC by Johann Zoffany, painted before 1765 when young Ralph had completed his education in England. The portrait shows him seated near the base of a tree holding a book in one hand and a hankerchief in the other.A dog, said to be his poodle, sits beside him.My purposes in locating the portrait are to include in it Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's forthcoming book on Painters and Paintings in the American South, 1564-1790.Thank you for any information you may have that would lead to the discovery of this important painting that has not been seen since the early 20th century.Carolyn J.
