I am a descendant of Martha, daughter of Elijah's first marriage - wife uknown.
The information I have regarding Elijah is:
"Elijah Ivey and his brothers, John, Edward, Henry, Robert, Mike and Susannah (a widow) who must have been their sister, was born and reared in England. They came or immigrated to America and settled in South Carolina before the American Revolutionary War.Elijah and Henry and another of the brothers served in the Revolutionary War for the independence of the Colonies.
"Elijah Ivey was born in 1759 in England and came over at the age of only 17 years for the great purpose of fighting for the freedom of the Colonies.
"Elijah Ivey enlisted in the army in Fairfield District (county), South Carolina in the spring of 1776; served three months, two of which were as substitutes for his brothers (their names are not given) in Captain Jacob Love's Company, Colonel John Wynn's South Carolina Regiment, was stationed at the barracks in Charleston. He volunteered in 1780 (exact date not given), served in Captain Thomas Stark's Company, Colonel Thomas Taylor's South Carolina Regiment, and was in the battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina; length of this last service about two years. In 1783 he enlisted in Orrangburg District (county), South Carolina, and served six months under the officers last named above, and was stationed in Orangeburg.
"He married and settled in Fairfield District, South Carolina, after the close of the Revolutionary War.His first wife (name not know), was English and Irish.Children of his first marriage were: sons, William, Thomas, Samuel and Jesse: daughters, Sallie who married a Mr. Tatum, Polly who married a Mr. McBride, Nancy who married Mr. William Aldrich (or Aldridge), Martha who married Mr. Alex Long and another (name forgotten) who married Mr. Zach Edwards.Children of his second marriage were none.Children of his third marriage all died in infancy.
"His fourth marriage was to Miss Mary Harten, or Hartin, about 1828 or 1829 or 1830.(All of these dates are given). This marriage is recorded as taking place near Winslow, Fairfield District, South Carolina. She died about the year 1835 in South Alabama - probably at Haynesville.
"Children of this, his fourth, marriage were three sons, Curis, Asa and Elijah P. Ivey, all of whom wer born in South Alabama - probably at Haynesville. The last named was the youngest and was born September 28 or 29 in 1835.
"Children of his fifth marriage were none.
"Elijah Ivey, the solider, died about January 15, 1840 as a result of injuries received from a fall from a horse or a carriage shortly after his fifth and last marriage.
"Elijah Ivey is recorded in Orangeburg District, South Carolina.
"Henry Ivey brother of Elijah was paid by the State of South Carolina for ninety-eight days of military duty in 1782.Alabama revolutionary pension records show that Elijah Ivey enrolled in Lowndes County, Alabama in 1833 aged 74 years and was granted a pension.
"Copy of his application in the Pension Bureau, Washington, D.C. would probably have interesting family record, and his war record in detail....
"Elijah Ivey with his entire family, including his married children and their families, moved or emigrated from South Carolina to the State of Alabama in the year of 1827, some of whom settled at Haynesville, Lowndes County, others around Tuscaloosa, and some in and around Montgomery. The family, being owners of a vast number of slaves moved with a train of wagons and carriages drawn by horses. They purchased and worked plantations where they settled."
I hope this helps.
If anyone has information to fill in the gaps, or about the ancestors of Elijah Ivey, please let me know.
Thanks.
Kel.
