Ken, I came across your posting doing a web search on Brayton Ives. I have a copy of the "Revised Regulations of the Army of the United States",1861. There is an inscription on the first page: "Mr. Matson,(I think) presented by Captain Brayton Ives, A.A. Genl., Terry's Brigade, Harrison's Landing, Va. 24th July AD, 1862." Is this your Brayton Ives? Could he have been at Harrison's Landing in 1862? The only other info I found on Brayton Ives mentions being President of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and giving a quote to a newspaper concerning the sinking of the Rebublic. It appears he was a passenger. The passengers were transferred to another vessel but lost all their belongings. How my great grandfather came by this book I am not sure. He was with the 6th Mass in the supply corps at Fortress Monroe and in New Berne, N.C. in 1862 and 1863. After being discharged in Mass., he returned to Suffolk, Va. for the remainder of the war. I'd be interested in anything you have on Brayton Ives. I'm curious about the connection.
