David Ives, Portsmouth, VA, b. abt. 1837 - who is he?

This is probably a forlorn hope, but I'm trying to identify a guy named David Ives, b. abt. 1837 in Virginia. He first appears in Portsmouth, Virginia in the 1850 census, age 13, but was not living with his family. He seems to have lived most of his life in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area. I've found him in a number of different sources, which place him in the area in the 1870's and 1880's. No sign of either wife or parents, but I have identified a sister named Elizabeth, b. abt. 1834, who married a man named Widgins (first name so far unknown).

And that,'s about it. Given his age and location, by the way, I did a search Confederate compiled service records. There's no record of a David Ives having ever served in the Confederate army.

Does anyone recognize David or Elizabeth? Know who their parents were?
