Denise,

Sounds like you're going through some of the same pain with this family that I have. Keep it up, and I'm pretty sure you'll eventually conclude that Michael Erskine Ives and Lydia Dickinson had a total of 6 children. All boys. The Michael Erskine, Jr., that you found was the oldest, while Burke was the youngest. Sorting this family out is complicated by the fact that many of them seem to have gone by their middle names for at least part of their lives. The whole pack, in birth order, were:

Michael Erskine
Wolford Bruce
Versal Dickinson
Sophronus Stocking
Charles Wesley
Burke Pennel

The three youngest all served in the Union army during the Civil War. Sophronus and Burke were in the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves. Charles was in the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry.

Speaking of Charles...scroll down just a few messages and you'll find a separate thread about him, and particularly about the manner of his death (murdered by a neighbor).

And as to Sophronus...don't ask me for the correct spelling of his first name. I've found a LOT of variations - Sophronus, Sophronius, Sempronius...

As to ordering Burke's pension application...my suggestion is to hold off for a few weeks. I was actually planning a research trip sometime in the next few weeks -- Probably February some time -- to look for info on a couple of Civil War soldiers. One thing I was planning on looking at was Burke P.'s pension application. So, if you can wait a bit, let's see how I do on it first.
