I've made SOME progress since 1999, but since I do this on my lunch breaks, so to speak, it moves slowly.

Burke's father died in 1835, so I'm reasonably convinced the Lydia living with him in 1860 and 1870 was indeed his mother. Researching his parents was complicated for awhile by the fact, as I now see it, that for most of his life Michael Erskine Ives went by his middle name. It took me awhile to convince myself that this guy named Erskine Ives was one and the same as Michael Erskine.

As for Burke's Civil War service...I have looked through his compiled service record, but have not yet gotten to his pension application. As I mentioned in my original post, he served in the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves. His service was cut short, however, when a barrel fell on him while unloading supplies. His brother, Sophronus, was equally unlucky...well, even more unlucky. HIS military career was cut short by a Confederate Minie ball. Be glad to share the details as I know them now.
