Thanks for the further information. I had seen where the name was spelled Di Leuce in some records. My motherís birth certificates says De Leuce, and the census of St Maryís Orphanage spells it with a De as well. My grandfather probably changed it at immigration.
I was also told that my Ippolito / Dí Ippolito and the many variants, ancestors came from Sicily to the mainland of Italy. I donít know when but was under the impression that they immigrated to America before the Di Leuce. All these spelling changes have me going crazy.
After consulting a map for the town of Balvano I found the location is not where I was told that my grandfather claimed he was from. My aunt said he always said he was from the heel of the boot as far south as you could go. Now that does not mean he did not re-locate at some point to one or the other place.
BUT I have found a place called Bajano. (Spelled Bajano on my map) The j would have the ďhĒ sound Iím sure, therefore being recorded as Bahano. It is located south of SS17 & bordered by the Monte del Matese range. Also not where I expected. You probably already know all this. I am just excited to find it. lol I just thought it was rather strange that the spelling of his name and the location at the bottom of the heel was so similar: Santa Maria di Leuca There are some interesting articles and history about Santa Maria di Leuca online. Such a beautiful place. Makes me wish I had been born in Italy.
I just want to give you a BIG thanks and a virtual HUG for all the help you have given me. I so much want to know about my family so I can pass the information down to my children and grandchildren. It has all been such a mystery for so long.
