I'm italian and i think i could explain your problem.
For a long time before 1929 was possible the difference between the church records and the statal records. This because the two sistem was separatly. Was common at the time of baptzed chose two name for a child. The parish wrote this two name, first name & middle name, after the surname. Sincerly this problem during now. If you tell to the statal officer the two name, the baby will sign for all the life with the entire name.
Sorry for my poor english.
