William,
In the very male-dominated world of Italy in the late 1800s, I doubt that Elizabeth would have been a governor.Perhaps she was a governess?(Which in fact, is a nanny.)My great great grandmother (also Italian) was also supposed to be a governess. Many times, the more wealthy families hired women to take care of the children (and I suppose other duties as well - cleaning, cooking, etc.)But it was a little more prestigious than "maid".
The name Cafaro is not unique in my hometown (in NE Ohio) so I would think the name Cafaro would only have been changed if they were originally German/Austrian/Polish etc., and then moved south (which doesn't seem logical.Usually they all moved north or overseas).
Good Luck in your search.
