I don't speak Italian, but I transcribed what I could and it seemed to indicate that someone could not write...therefore, an X was "elected" to represent the signature.......... In the birth records, when a witness is unable to write, it is noted in the document that they cannot write their signatures and the names are signed for them, often by the Sindanco--the Mayor. I believe Peter's reference to "in good faith" is correct-- But I cannot guarantee you that what I stated was indeed, the context of the message. Sometimes the documents are specific to the region and the terminology is dialectic making words not perfectly understandable to people versed in formal Italian.......there are sooooo many dialects.
