Mary,
I use the AltaVista-Babelfish website. It's not 100% accurate, but it will give you the gist of what they are saying. I get two and three page letters from Italy (I don't speak Italian) so use that both for translating and for composing return letters. Sometimes you have to break the sentences up in to pieces so it translates properly, but it's better than nothing!
