My grandfather, Ilario Albanese, came to this country with his family in 1897 and settled in Syracuse, NY. He owned a hotel and restaurant there. They relocated to Piedmont (I don't know the exact year but it was prior to 1926) after being threatened by the "Blankhand" organization for not paying for protection. His wife Rose had been married before to a man named Demasi who was murdered by this organization in Italy for this very reason.

From what I can remember from the Albanese family gatherings in Piedmont, WV, the mountains reminded them very much of the area around Caulonia and jobs were plentiful with the railroad. This was a very prosperous area at the time.

He retired from the B&O railroad as a trackman.

One of his 3 sons, Peter, was a fireman for the B&O and died on Christmas day in 1926 as the result of a traffic accident (his car overturned) in Piedmont.
