Darren,
Using the ship's manifest age at time of sailing, try to determine his birth year. Is Castel di Sangro the port? OR his residence? If his residence, I would suggest that you rent some microfilm for birth records from the LDS. Their website is www.familysearch.org. You can find the nearest library (Family History Center or FHC)to Dothan, and then you can search through their "catalogue" to see if they have the microfilm for the date and place that you are searching for. The Italian birth certificates are chock full of info (parents' names, including mother's maiden name, parents' ages usually, and will give parents' fathers' names and if living or deceased). If you don't read Italian, there are several good books to use, one by Trafford Cole, and the other by Lynn ?? (her name escapes me, but my LDS has the book.) They both give examples of records AND translations of Italian words, etc., that you will encounter. Good Luck!
Michelle
