I wrote to them in kindergarten level Italian but I know several other people who have written to them in simple English and have a good reply also. Keep in mind that whichever language you write to them in that is the language that their reply will be written in.
I suggest that you get your letter off to Italy as quickly as possible or it may take a while to get a reply. Most of Italy seems to take time off during the month of August and not much gets done during that time. Don't worry if they don't reply quickly because they may be short staffed and it could be end of summer before they are up to full staff again. I speak from experience!!
