IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS - ADDITIONAL INFO re JACOB ISLEY, SON OF LUDWIG ISLEY
Posted by: Charles Ward (ID *****4477) Date: May 14, 2004 at 06:37:36
In Reply to: JACOB ISLEY (c1770-1830), of NC & TN; son of Ludwig Isley, of Guilford Co., NC by Charles Ward of 430

A couple of corrections need to be made regarding my original posting on Jacob Isley, of Guilford Co., NC and Sullivan Co., TN.

First, and most importantly, he was the son of Ludwig Isley, but I incorrectly placed him as a son of Ludwig Isley, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth. JACOB ISLEY WAS A SON OF LUDWIG ISLEY, SR. AND HIS WIFE, BARBARA ISLEY, of Guilford Co., NC. Ludwig Isley, Jr. was a brother of Jacob Isley.

The second correction is the birth date approximation of Jacob Isley. A revised birth date estimate places his birth at around 1761-1764. Due to the paucity of records, it's difficult to approximate his birth date, but we
do know he would have been of legal age when he sold his share of his father's land in 1791, indicating he was born no later than about 1770.

I am fortunate to have corresponded with Peggy Bruckner on this family. She has done a great deal of research and I must give her substantial credit. Likewise, Paul LeMaster has been very helpful with TN records dealing with this
family.

An overview of this branch of the Isley family is in order. Let us begin with Ludwig Eisele.

LUDWIG EISELE (Isley)

Ludwig Eisele was probably born around 1720-1725 in Germany. Contrary to various claims, nothing definitive has been found regarding his place of origin. Ludwig Eisele arrived on the ship "Osgood" at the Port of
Philadelphia on 29 Sep 1750.

There has been confusion regarding the given name of Ludwig Eisele. Ludwig is the German form of Lewis, which is Louis in the French form. It came to be spelled in a variety of ways in the American colonies(Ludwick, Ludrick, etc.). What's more, the German surname Eisele came to be Anglicized as Isley, Iseley, Isly, Eisley, etc.

Ludwig Isley settled in North Carolina by the 1760s. "Loadwick Iseler" was naturalized according to Salisbury District (Rowan) Court Records on 22 Sep
1763.

"Ludowick Isley," of Guilford Co., NC bought 250 acres on Cedar Creek from Henry McCullough on 1 Jan 1773 (Guilford Co., NC Deed Bk 1, p. 237).

Ludwig Isley, Sr. died prior to the ennumeration of the 1790 Census. He apparently died intestate, but surviving deed records name his heirs in connection with the sale of the 250 acres Isley bought from Henry McCullough.

Jacob Isley, of Guilford Co., NC sold his one sixth share of 250 acres on Cedar Creek to Christian Isley, on 14 Feb 1791. This was Jacob Isley's one sixth share of his father's 250 acres bought from Henry McCullough (Guilford
Co., NC Deed Bk 5, p.330).

Christian, Palser (Balthasar), Conrad, and Philip Isely sold their one-sixth shares of their father's land (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 420) in November, 1792. The deed states that the "heirs of Ludwick Isley which
(sic) is not of age," also were offered the chance to sell their one sixth share if they agreed to do so upon coming of age. These heirs were the children of Ludwig
Isley, Jr. who would have been grandchildren of Ludwig Isley, Sr. Both Ludwig, Sr. and Ludwig, Jr. appear to have died about the same time (thus causing confusion for some Isley researchers).

The abovementioned deed records allow us to identify these six children of Ludwig Eisele/Isley, Senior:

1. Ludwig Isley, Jr. The will of Lodwick Isley, Jr. is dated 26 Jul 1788 (Guilford Co., NC Will Book A, p. 190). His wife Elizabeth is given the estate during her widowhood or until the oldest child comes of age. His
children are unnamed. Christian Isley served as a co-executor along with Peter Summors.

2. Christian Isley. He moved to Campbell Co., TN. A deed of gift, dated 15 Jun 1812, names his children: Catherine (m. Jacob Queener); Barbara (m. Daniel Queener); Hannah (m. George Zimmerman); Rosanna (m. John Lieb; John Isley; and Polly Isley.

3. Balthasar (Palser) Isley

4. Conrad Isley; spent time in Sullivan Co., TN

5. Phillip Isley; spent time in Sullivan Co., TN

6. Jacob Isley (b.ca 1760). See below for more information.

The wife of Ludwig Isley, Sr. may be identified as Barbara. On 11 May 1790, "Barbaray Isley widow of Lodwick Iseley Senr. deceased" of Guilford Co., NC is mentioned in a deed record (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 175).
The name "Barbara" was perpetuated among her descendants.

JACOB ISLEY

Jacob Isley was probably born about 1761-1764, the son of Ludwig Isley, Sr. and his wife, Barbara Isley. Jacob Isley sold his one sixth share of 250 acres on Cedar Creek to his brother, Christian Isley, on 14 Feb 1791 (Guilford Co.,
NC Deed Bk 5, p.330). This was Jacob Isley's one sixth share of the 250 acres his father bought from Henry McCullough.

In 1792, Jacob Isley bought land from John Yancey in Sullivan Co., TN (at this point Sullivan County was still part of North Carolina). He is found in Sullivan County records again in 1806. Due to the destruction of Sullivan Co., TN records, there are few records that remain which mention him.

Jacob Isley served as a surety for his son, George Isley, in a court case (Roane Co., TN County Court Minutes Apr 1830-Oct 1831, p. 40) on 29 Apr 1830. Jacob Isley appears to have died shortly thereafter, prior to the ennumeration
of the 1830 Census.

Due to the destruction of Sullivan Co., TN records, it is necessary to reconstruct the family of Jacob Isley based on the best surviving circumstantial evidence. His children:

1. George Isley (born around 1800 in Sullivan Co., TN); married Nancy Queener (b.ca 1806), daughter of John and Elizabeth (Lowry) Queener. Nancy Queener was a niece of Jacob and Daniel Queener who married daughters of Christian
Isley, elder brother of Jacob Isley.

George Isley resided in Sullivan Co., TN and moved to Roane Co., TN by 1825, when he is first found in Roane County tax records. He is found in Roane County tax records through 1832. He is found in Roane Co., TN in the 1830 Census
ennumeration. George Isley was in Meigs Co., TN as of the
ennumeration of the 1840 Census and is found there in the 1850 Census ennumeration. Prior to 1860, he moved to Franklin County, Arkansas where he is found listed in
the 1860 Census ennumeration.

Jacob Isley served as a surety for George Isley in an 1830 Roane Co., TN court case. George Isley named a daughter "Barbara" apparently in honor of his paternal grandmother, Barbara Isley, wife of Ludwig Isley, Sr. For
more information on George and Nancy (Queener) Isley(including their children), please see my posting to the Isley GenForum on Nancy (Isley) Ward, the eldest daughter
of George and Nancy (Queener) Isley.

2. Martin Isley (b.ca 1795). He resided in Sullivan Co., TN. Children:
i. James Isley
ii. David Isley
iii. Elizabeth "Betty" Isley
iv. Sarah Isley
v. Mary Isley
vi. William Penn Isley (b. 2 Sep 1824; d. 3 Mar 1877 in Sullivan Co., TN). He married Rosanna Hawk, 17 Nov 1846.

Harold Isley, a descendant of this family, wrote a family history in which he stated Martin Isley was a son of William Isley. However, it appears Harold Isley was confusing the father of Martin Isley, with Martin Isley's
son, William Isley. Surviving circumstantial evidence indicates Martin Isley was a brother of George Isley and therefore was another son of Jacob Isley.
