Jacob Isley (c1770-1830),
of Guilford Co., NC and Sullivan Co., TN;
son of Ludwig Isley, Jr., of Guilford Co., NC

It would appear little has been written about Jacob Isley (b.ca 1770), son of Ludwig Isley, Jr. (d.1788/9) and his wife, Elizabeth, of Guilford Co., NC. I therefore take this opportunity to review the known records dealing with him and discuss his children.

The will of Ludwig Isley (Guilford Co., NC Will Bk A, p. 190) is dated 26 Jul 1788 and indicates his children were not yet of legal age. We may estimate that Jacob Isley was therefore probably born about 1770.

Jacob Isley left Guilford Co., NC and can be found in what is now Sullivan Co., TN as early as 1792 when he obtained land from John Yancey. Deed records also mention Jacob Isley in Sullivan Co., TN in 1806. Unfortunately, many
early Sullivan County records were destroyed in a courthouse fire.

Jacob Isley apparently moved to Roane Co., TN in the 1820s where he served as a surety for his son, George Isley, in a court case (Roane Co., TN County Court Minutes
Apr 1830-Oct 1831, p. 40) on 29 Apr 1830. Jacob Isley appears to have died shortly thereafter, prior to the ennumeration of the 1830 Census.

It is worth note to mention the fact that Jacob Isley's brothers, Phillip and Conrad Isley, also resided in Sullivan Co., TN, but their length of residence appears to have been brief. Another brother, Christian Isley, settled in Campbell Co., TN. Two of Christian Isley's children married into the Queener family, the same family into which Jacob Isley's son, George, married.

Unfortunately, Jacob Isley appears to have "slipped through the cracks" when it comes to being found in census records. Due to the destruction of the Sullivan Co., TN records, we are left with few primary sources which
mention him. We may, however, reconstruct the family group of Jacob Isley based on a preponderance of the surviving circumstantial evidence. Unfortunately,
at this time, nothing has been found which would indicate the name of Jacob Isley's wife.

Children:

1. Martin Isley (born about 1795): A resident of Sullivan Co., TN. A modern-day account of Martin Isley, written by a descendant, stated without proof that Martin was the son of a William Isley. No William Isley has
been found in Sullivan Co., TN and as the claim was based without benefit of research, is discounted. Surviving evidence would indicate Martin Isley was a son of Jacob Isley and brother of George Isley.

2. George Isley (b.ca 1800; d. 7 Feb 1877);

for a discussion of this gentleman and his family.

It appears there has been a good deal of confusion in Isley family research; particularly the earlier generations, especially in identifying the various Ludwig Isleys and other similarly named individuals. I would be interested in communicating with anyone who is researching these families.
