Isles family, 1923
Maryville Enterprise (Blount Co. TN) Wednesday, September 5, 1923:
“Clay Blood In Blount County---In a family graveyard near Greenback is buried Benjamin Bingham who married Miss Dulaney, who was descended from the Clays of Virginia. This couple moved from North Carolina and settled on Baker’s Creek. Mr. Bingham had seen service in the Revolutionary War and had as a relic a cannon ball which he had picked up after the battle of Yorkstown. Mr. Iles, a descendant of Mr. Bingham, has this relic in his possession.
A daughter of Benjamin Bingham and Miss Dulaney, Paul W. Bingham, married William Isles. Their son, William R. Isles, married Elizabeth Kennedy. Their son, Tipton Calloway Isles, married Laura A. Blair. The children of this couple are Sam and John Isles of Harriman; Mrs. William Barr of Madisonville, Mrs. Kirk of Knoxville and Mrs. Green of Tampa, Fla. This is only one branch of the descendants of Benjamin Bingham and Miss Dulaney. They have a host of descendants whom it is hoped will be interested to know that it is the intention of the ladies of the Mary Blount Chapter to apply to the Sons of the Revolutionary for markers for the grave of this soldier. The first Clay who came from England and settled in Hanover County, Virginia, was John Clay. He was a Grenadier in the British Army. Henry Clay, the great orator and statesman was descended from him. The Clays intermarried with the Mitchells, Greens, Lewis and Willis families and moved to North Carolina and Kentucky and later to Tennessee.”
