Looking for decendants of Henry Isham of Henrico (Chesterfield)?
The Henry Isham family of old Henrico is often thought to be connected to numerous families of colonial Virginia. It was used as a first name by a lot families in later generations. However, it is much more likely that the first name Isham was selected to honor Henry's two grandsons who were important military men in the county and colony (from 1670-1720.) These were:
-Capt. Isham Epes, son of Colonel Francis Epes and Anne Isham, and
-Colonel Isham Randolph, son ofWilliam Randolph and Mary Isham
In addition, each of these men had children who were also important members of their respective communities:
-Isham Randolph son of Isham Randolph, born about 1710
-Isham Womack son of Thomas Womack, born about 1710
-Isham Epes son of possibly Francis Epes, born about 1710
-Isham Epes son of William Epes, born about 1710
By 1730 the name became very popular in the community. A long list of grown men with the name Isham can be found in Chesterfield County as early as 1754. (The 1704 Rent Roll for all of Virginia contained only Isham Epes and Col. [Isham] Randolph.)
1754 Tithe List of Chesterfield:
Major Isham Epes
Isham Thompson
Isham Andrews
Isham Britton
Isham Evans
Isham Moore
1762 Tithe List of Chestefield
Isham Clark
Isham Evans
Isham Graves
Isham Joyner
Isham Moore
And from other records in Chesterfield there were also:
Isham Farmer son of William (b c1730),
Isham Belcher son of Richard (b c1730),
Isham Pruitt son of Uriah (b1740),
Isham Allen son of Edmund (born c1740),
Isham Edwards son of William (born c1755)
Isham Blankenship son of Richard (born c1740)
Isham Farmer son of Benjamin (bc1740)
Isham Cheatham son of ?(born c1750)
Other lists for neighboring Prince George County where the Epes lived also included men with the name. They can't all be decendants of Henry Isham. So it seems certain that, while the first name Isham is a good clue that the family is connected to these old Virginia communities, it's not necessarily a pointer to a close connection with the Henry Isham family. I spent a lot of hours trying to prove otherwise until I looked at the long list of men named Isham.
