ISBISTERs in New Zealand
My g.grandmother was Ann(Isbister)Couper b.1851 in Birsay, Orkney. Her parents were William Isbister b.1824 and Catherine(Johnston)Isbister b.1828 -who had 8 children.
Ann and her 9 children arrived in New Zealand in 1894 to join her husband William Banks Couper, who had settled at Totara, North Otago.
An article in "The Orcadian" of 1940(recording the death of Ann)notes that Ann and three brothers emigrated to New Zealand.
Just recently I have been able to confirm that a James aged 22 (James Johnston b.1853) and a Robert aged 21(Robert Brash b.1854) arrived in Otago,New Zealand December 1875 and a Magnus aged 20 (Magnus b.1857) arrived January 1877.
I believe that Mary b.1859 went to America and Peter b.1861 may have emigrated to Australia.
William b.1850,the eldest remained in Orkney.I have no trace on John b.1856.
Research continues.
