If most of the people who participate in the Isbell Family Forum are basically middle-class professionals, then costs shouldn't really be a factor (unless one is suffering the slings and arrows of massive debt). The basic costs for male Y-DNA marker tests start at $150. For female MTDNA testing it's about $130. These aren't the sort of prices that would scare off the Rockerfellers. Of course the prices go up for the more sophisticated tests. But remember, you can start at a basic level and later upgrade. And yes, all you need to do is swab the inside of your mouth for one minute. But the end results are clearly what matters here. Tax rolls, parish records, family bibles, and census taking all play their part. But there are dangers concerning accuracy. I'm sure Sarah Coon and Rev. Sherman Isbell will testify to that. But what about the SCIENCE? We now have a tool available for tracing our Isbell-related heritage that will either confirm the paperwork or go beyond beyond it. We can even encounter those individuals from families who are genetically linked to our own Isbell lines that we never knew existed. Again, DNA testing will not provide ALL the answers. But it's a scientific tool. It provides the means to find answers to Isbell family-related questions that have remained elusive over the decades. If the opportunity is there, then it should be taken. Period.
