ISBELL FAMILY DNA PROJECT
One of the subjects missing from this forum is a topic which is gaining international attention: DNA testing. The last time anyone posted anything close to this was in 2006. Recently I made the decision to participate in an Isbell DNA Project on Family Tree DNA [www.familytreedna.com]. I just sent in a sample. I await the results with great excitement. So far, however, there are only around 10 participants. All of those involved are from the old Virginia Zachariah line. My participation allows the inclusion of the Benjamin Isbell/Lettice Hickman line (Maureen Hyde, are you reading this?) and all those related. But less than a dozen can't really show the possibilities. Imagine what the results would be if EVERYONE who ever participated in this Forum were to take the DNA test? Imagine how it would look in comparing all the Isbell lines and those related families both here and in Europe, especially England? Here we are straining our brains in vain attempts to fill in blanks from the early colonial days around the Tidewater Virginia area. The paperwork can only go so far. And even in more recent entries, we still have to be careful in accepting what we think is right. DNA testing, while not an end to itself, can only help augment the paperwork. I allows us a chance to see our true family relationships, in terms of the genetic codes passed down from our ancestors. And, no, I don't have any financial stake in the DNA company; I work for the Smithsonian (U.S. Government). Sure there are price levels. You can start with the lowest and upgrade from there over time. If you ever wondered about doing this, now's the time to consider. If the Virginia Isbell lines are supposed to be related by blood, then let's find out how much so and whom we match up with. I think it's worth a shot. How about you?
